Styling baggy jeans can be tricky—here’s how to do it at any age

From horseshoes to barrel legs, unconventional denim silhouettes continue to dominate the fashion landscape.

But designing these avant-garde shapes can be more challenging than your average baggy jeans.

Whether you’re embracing the horseshoe trend or opting for a more classic cut, achieving an effortless, effortless look requires a certain amount of flair.

We asked fashion experts for advice on mastering the art of baggy jeans, no matter your age.

Adding volume to baggy jeans is the hardest part. Fashion designer and podcaster, Amanda Weekley OBE says: “If your jeans are exaggerated, keep the top polished. A nice tee, a nice knit or a tailored jacket will work well.

“Conversely, if you like a big top, choose a long top to define your waist. And always consider your outerwear – cropped or cropped jackets give you more definition, while floor-length jackets create a dramatic, elongated silhouette.”

If you want to pair your favorite baggy tee with baggy jeans, the French Vine is your secret weapon.

Laura Watson, Creative Director of Seasalt Cornwall says: “If you like loose tops, just tuck in the front and it creates shape without sacrificing comfort.

What shoes should I wear?

When it comes to casual, baggy denim, get the shoes wrong and your look will fall apart.

“A pointe pump or ankle boot will instantly dress up baggy jeans,” says Weekly. “For something more casual, go with ballet flats or luxe loafers.”

According to Watson, a pair of flared jeans is a bit more relaxed and happens to be trousers, “because it’s tapered at the ankle, they work with Chelsea boots for an incredibly polished look.

“In the summer, ballet flats or open-toed mules are great.”

Depending on the look you’re looking for, “Pointed-toe shoes elongate the leg, while pointed-toe shoes balance out the volume,” says personal stylist and celebrity consultant Orina Robb.

If you’re going for a more casual look, Rob suggests choosing a slim fit rather than a slim fit to add height.

How to style if you’re petite

Any baggy clothes can make you feel tired. And if you’re a petite fan, it can make getting close to baggy jeans a little tiring.

“Proportion is everything,” Weekley says. “A high waist is your best friend [if you’re petite] Because it instantly lifts the legs.

“A cropped length or rolled hem will accentuate your frame.”

If you’re on the petite side, “an ankle boot or a cute pointy pump adds height and keeps the fit in baggy jeans,” says Holly Watkins, founder of vintage boutique One Scoop.

How to Style the New Trends: From Horseshoes to Barrel Jeans

While denim trends come and go, horseshoe and barrel jeans are sure to be timeless.

“They have this sculptural quality that’s both modern and unique, which when done right is absolutely delightful,” Weekley says.

His point about avant-garde silhouettes is to focus on proportion.

“Balance the volume with a sharp-stitched blazer or a second-skin cashmere knit,” she says. “A large belt helps define the waist and pulls the whole look together.”

“Proper [of horseshoe jeans] “It’s amazing because the shadow moves inwards,” says Watson. They work for everyone.”

The important thing to remember about flip flop jeans is to keep your upper or outer construction to create a contrasting and balanced fit.

Rob recommends a woolen coat or cropped jacket.

Avoid style mistakes

In many ways, baggy jeans are easy to wear, but that means they’re easy to get wrong.

“Drowning in clothes is the number one mistake,” warns Walkley. “Buggy should look intentional, not random.”

Watson agrees, noting, “A big sweater over baggy jeans? It can overwhelm you. If you’re not into knitting, add a belt—it defines your shape without looking forced.”

Making sure you find the right length for your wide leg jeans is essential. Rob’s pet peeve is denim leggings. She recommends cutting the length of the nails—then it’s easy to style them however you like.

The secret to modeling them through the ages

While skinny jeans have had a bit of a resurgence, it’s clear that baggy jeans aren’t going anywhere. And the secret to making them work is about trust.

As Weeks says, “If you feel good, you look good.”

One of the biggest fashion lies is that some trends end after the age of 30. “Forget it nonsense,” says Haft. Jane has no age. It’s all about staying true to your style DNA.

The weekly formula is simple. “If you want to go all out, go for the opposite—big blazers, crop tops, chunky pants. If you want a sleeker look, look for a luxe bun with a silk shirt, crisp bodysuit or sharp-shouldered jacket.”
