Lauren Turner, a CSUF football player, has died after being hit by a scooter

Lauren Turner, a sophomore player on the Cal State Fullerton women’s soccer team, died nearly six weeks after she and a teammate were hit by a box truck while riding electric scooters on a road near campus. She was 19 years old.

“Early this morning, our sweet Lorraine fell asleep in the Lord,” her family wrote Friday on a GoFundMe page that was started to help cover her medical expenses. “Our hearts are broken, and our family is forever changed. We will miss her beyond measure, yet we know she is now in the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

A native of Tustin, Turner began playing football at age 4. She was a four-year varsity player at Beekman High, captained the team for two years, and earned the team MVP award her junior year. As a freshman at Cal State Fullerton she played in all 20 games, starting four, and finished with one goal and one assist. This season, she made eight starts in 10 games.

“As a dedicated soccer player, she was known for her drive, determination and the way she lifted up those around her,” the Turner family wrote. “Her teammates and coaches have shared countless stories of her positivity, humor, competitiveness and leadership – reminders of the light she carried both on and off the field.

“As her family, we have always known the goodness and light that shined within her, but hearing from others confirms that she was a true blessing to everyone who knew her.”

Turner and her Titans teammate Ashlyn Goin were riding electric scooters to a men’s soccer game around 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 when they collided with a box truck on Associated Street near Yorba Linda Blvd., according to the Fullerton Police Department.

A Fullerton police news release said officers responding to the crash found two women “in the roadway with significant and life-threatening injuries.”

First responders took the two, who were not wearing helmets, to a local trauma center. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, the department said.

Christy Wells, public information specialist for Fullerton police, said Tuesday that the investigation into the collision remains active and ongoing. No charges have been filed against the driver with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

According to an Oct. 30 update on a GoFundMe page started to help with Gwen’s medical bills, Gwen had made significant progress after a month in the ICU before being moved to the intensive care unit.

“Her recovery was nothing short of a miracle,” Gwen’s family wrote.

A candlelight vigil in Turner’s memory will be held Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. PST at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Stadium field.

“Lauren was the funnest, most charming and loving teammate you could ask for,” Turner’s teammates of the 2025 football team said in a statement. “She was the first to celebrate other people’s successes. She is the true definition of an amazing person. She always carried herself with compassion, kindness and joy. The impact she has made on the Titans women’s soccer program is tremendous.”

“She will be fondly missed by all but forever remembered by her Titan family. We love you, our number 5 forever.”
