LA County’s first flu death confirmed; The weather can be harsh

LA County had its first flu death of a season that health officials warned could be severe.

The Department of Public Health confirmed the flu-related death on Wednesday.

The death occurred in an elderly person with underlying health conditions who had not received the flu vaccine this season. Public health research.

“We offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of those we lost. This tragic death reminds us of how serious the flu can be,” Los Angeles County Health Director Dr. Monte Davis said in a news release.

Flu activity is low right now, though it is likely to pick up next week with Thanksgiving and the holiday season, which usually involves air travel and indoor gatherings.

Last year’s flu season was the worst California has seen in years — and state health officials are already warning that this year could be just as bad.

Health professionals, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend an annual flu vaccine for everyone over 6 months of age.

Nationwide, the number of children who died from the flu last season — 280 — was the highest in nearly 15 years, according to one report. According to the authorities, about 9 out of 10 of these children have not been vaccinated.

The flu vaccine can be administered at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine and takes two weeks to provide protection.

“You can reduce your risk by taking simple but powerful steps,” Davis said. “[W]Wash your hands frequently, stay home and away from others when you feel sick, and wear a proper mask in crowded indoor spaces, around high-risk people, or when you have symptoms.”

As respiratory virus activity increases in LA County, the Department of Public Health is also recommending that everyone 6 months of age or older get the new COVID-19 vaccine. RSV vaccination is also recommended for older adults, pregnant people, and children.

LA County residents can find a vaccination site near them by visiting Department website.
