There are a lot of fancy, Michelin-starred restaurants, but there are a lot of delicious, moderately priced places in L.A., and these are my favorites.”

9:30am: Sleep, then hydrate

I am a lazy person on weekends. I often have to get up early for work so it’s nice to have a little time for myself on Sundays. After we wake up, my wife (Alex Gering, bassist in Ringo Deathstar’s band) makes herself coffee. I start the day with a glass of water or matcha, then we’ll probably go to a restaurant for breakfast.

10:30 am: Get some really good pancakes

My favorite place to sit John O’Groats In West Pico. They don’t just do one side of the fruit. They do cantaloupe, especially, and I love it. I wouldn’t have chosen cantaloupe as my go-to fruit for breakfast, but it turns out that cantaloupe is pretty good. They make their own biscuits, which are delicious. They have a variety of really good pancakes. They do a seven grain granola pancake that I really like.

If we don’t go there, we will go to another breakfast place called Met her at the bar. This place is really delicious. The man who opened it met his wife at the bar. They have great French toast, and they do Thai-style fried chicken and waffles. I just love the fresh squeezed orange juice at both places.

Afternoon: Take a walk with Betty White

After breakfast, we will go for a walk with our dog and take a lazy walk around the neighborhood. Our dog is an all white pit bull and his name is Betty White. We will go through Hancock Park. There are some really beautiful houses here, and it’s nice to just walk around. I also grew up in that neighborhood for a while. I went to the third street [Elementary] School so I am very familiar with the area.

1 p.m.: Eat enchiladas by the beach

Then we will go to the beach. This is a bit of a stretch, but one of my favorite restaurants exists because I spent a lot of time in Santa Monica and Venice as a teenager. It is said cha cha chickenand by far, my favorite restaurant in LA is in Santa Monica, one block east of the water, where Pico’s Dead Sea reaches the beach. I order the jerk chicken enchiladas, which come with a side of rice and beans. There’s also a small chopped salad that comes on the side, and I love the dressing. Enchiladas are topped with a sweet and spicy combination of sauces that are great. And then I get the spicy Cuban fries. I always ask them for extra crispy, and they put a little spicy salt on top. I went there as a kid and I became friends with the owner, Ricky Prado. He inherited the place from his parents. He and I took a trip to Florida once, where he met my dad, as I met his whole family because they all worked in a restaurant.

2:30 p.m.: Walk at Santa Monica State Beach

Then we will go for a walk to the beach to enjoy the beauty and fresh sea air. There is a small road that goes through Cha Cha Chikan Marvin Broad Bike Path there is The Santa Monica Pier is to the north of it, and to the south is the shopping area of Venice Beach. You can see street performances and all the fun performers as you go.

4:30 p.m.: Puzzles and video games after traffic

Traffic back home is maybe an hour. There, Alex might do some crossword puzzles while I read or play video games for a bit. We’ll put on some jazz music in the background. Or maybe we just hang out on the porch and enjoy the day. We are Long Folk. So when we have the chance, we just enjoy reading and doing crossword puzzles. It’s a simple life. We bring the Midwest to Los Angeles. All I need is a rocking chair.

6 p.m.: Happy hour rings

After that, we might get to happy hour Uchi West Hollywood. My wife is from Austin and her favorite restaurant just opened a place in LA, so we each go there once in a while for a good meal. It’s Japanese, but focuses on sushi. If you sit at the bar, you can get happy hour all night.

7:30 p.m.: Keep happy hour to dinner

We will eat some of our favorite foods. My wife loves a special one and I love Mitsu Mitsu, which has ritual zero-proof gin, rosemary and yuzu honey. Our favorite dish is called Hama Chal. It’s yellow fish topped with small slices of mandarin orange, topped with a little Thai ice, and sitting in a ponzu sauce. My wife loves edamame and I don’t. But this place has the best edamame so I can’t help but enjoy it. Some are slightly crispy, and have lemon juice and salt in them. It is very pleasant. They outsource things so you can really take your time and enjoy everything.

9 p.m.: Dessert on and off screen

We might head back home, eat something sweet or watch ‘The Great British Baking Show’ or ‘Below Deck’, a drama-filled look at the world of private yachts. You also get a good view of the interesting people who rent these boats, and whether they are good tippers or not.

11 pm: Go to bed after laughing

We would go to bed but probably sleep for an hour just talking and laughing before we actually fell asleep. It will be a perfect Sunday.
