How to have the best Sunday in LA according to Eric Wareheim

In “Steakhouse: People, Places, Recipes,” comedian, director and writer Eric Wareheim takes us on a thrilling cross-country road trip, highlighting the enduring charm of America’s steakhouses, including L.A. institutions and Frank & Taylor Steakhouse.

“It’s about nostalgia,” says Wareheim, who is perhaps best known as the co-creator of the TV series “Tim and Eric, great show, great job!” “The people and the atmosphere are what make you feel so good.”

In Sunday Fund, the people of LA give us a play-through of their ideal Sunday around town. Find ideas and inspiration on where to go, what to eat and how to enjoy life this weekend.

But more than Red Booth restaurants and steakhouses lift Wareheim’s spirits.

“Gardening turned me into this new version of myself,” she says. “For me, it’s about peace and deep travel. Cultivation has changed something in my brain so that I see things differently.”

A self-proclaimed “nursery hunter,” Wareheim criss-crossed California in his truck, hooking up with farmers along the way. His latest work, Plant Studio Serpentine, reflects his love of plants and gardening. “We built an oasis in a big parking lot in Boyle Heights, and it looks like a botanical garden in Australia,” he says. “It’s very hard. I worked for six months to get two big bottle trees here.”

Not surprisingly, a perfect Sunday for Wareheim involves buying plants and using rocket yards and mines, though he won’t reveal exactly where. “You create life every day,” she says of gardening.

And though he’s been known to hit Taco Bell on the road (“My order is always the same: bean burritos and Doritos locos tacos with onions and sour cream”), when he’s in LA, he prefers the shrimp aguachile in hand. Loretto In Elysian Valley (aka Frogtown) or from a beer-filled burrito Burritos La Palma in Boyle Heights.

Here’s what his ideal Sunday in LA would look like.

5 am: Enjoy coffee and sunrise in the garden

On a perfect Sunday, I’ll wake up at 5 am, make myself a La Colombie coffee, and walk in my garden, which could be my greatest masterpiece. I’ve been enjoying watching sunrises lately. Sunrise and sunset are very important to me because they are such reflective times. 5 to 7 am is the only time I am at rest. No one calls me, and I turn off my phone. As part of my morning routine, I listen to Nala Sinephro’s album “Space 1.8” every day. I highly recommend it. This and gardening together turn me into a new version of myself, every five years. It is now about a deep journey through art and design. Because I get up so early, I often ask people if we can meet at 7am and they’re like, “What?” are like

9 a.m.: Hanging nursery in Pasadena

After I wake up, drink coffee and walk around my garden, I feel inspired, so I go. Blvd Nursery Sometimes I don’t even have a shop in Pasadena. Simply walking through the nursery is a beautiful thing. is on the way Lincoln Avenue NurseryOG of Nurseries in Pasadena. But Blvd has more artistic, sculptural patterns. It’s a good bang bang for both beats. When I first started, I bought in storm in West Hollywood. I had to save all year to get a bag. But it inspired me. Once you pay those prices, you need to dig deeper. Part of the fun for me is finding these things. I interact with people who grow plants. Travel is a big part of it.

11 am: Hungry for a hoagie

After that I would be hungry for a hoagie. Lately, I’ve been beaten Delco Rose Hoagies in Highland Park. This is the most legit Philadelphia hoagie – I’m from Philly – and it brings me joy. They use really good products, and you don’t feel dirty afterwards. Josh Agran, the owner, is great. I order the classic Italian with prosciutto, ham, salami and provolone. There are three different styles, but when it comes to pizza and hoagies, I’m pretty simple. Right now, my whole life is about using these happy feelings. This is what I tried with my book “Steakhouse”.

Lunch: Hit the Serpentine, snack along Taco Row

After that, I usually go to my studio head covering in Boyle Heights. We are currently taking appointments and are very excited. Some of my plants are ones we have grown here. Others are like art, and I don’t want to sell them. I have six gardening teams, and we collaborate on some modern things like landscaping Loretto Restaurant in Frogtown, another place I like to go on weekends. My studio is nearby Row of tacosand when friends are in town, I go to them Tacos y Birria La Unica Because their consumption is very special. Mariscos Jalisco is the love of my life. and Los Originales Tacos Arabes The combination of Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisine is truly a wonderful combination.

2pm: Stroll through Chinatown and buy cookbooks

I love independent bookstores Serving nowwhich is devoted entirely to cookbooks. The heavenly books Also great in Los Feliz, but Chinatown One of my favorite places to walk around. I went and signed my books at the service now. You can buy an autographed copy there now.

6pm: Szechuan-Vietnamese dinner at Alhambra

Because my weekends often take me east to nurseries, stone yards, and quarries, I usually end up Boston lobsterMy favorite place to eat in Alhambra. This is a unique type of Szechuan-Vietnamese combination that may be the best thing for me. They do all the classics like beef with Chinese broccoli and kung pao shrimp, which has red Sichuan chiles that will make your mouth go numb. It is comfortable and not fancy but pleasant; The quality of the food is unbelievable. I order the French-style meat cubes, which are chunks of meat cooked with spices such as spices and other ingredients that you would find in French cuisine with a Vietnamese influence. There is also Crispy Shrimp, which is a shrimp dish marinated in a sweet chili sauce. I’m a wine guy, so we’ll pair it with German Riesling. I’ll probably bring my own wine and straws too. I’m trying not to be as rude as I used to be – I’ll bring a cooler with me. But drinking wine from a beautiful glass is like herbs paired with good dishes.

8 p.m.: Relax with a martini in the hot tub

I always end the night the same way: I get in the hot tub and pour myself a martini. I have two cats and I love hanging out with them. After that I would either go out or stay in. Lately I stayed inside because I was busy with my book. It’s a simple but wonderful way to end my day.
