A pair of earthquakes rocked Riverside County near Idyll Wilde

A Thanksgiving Day earthquake was reported Thursday around a diner in Riverside County.
They happened just after 5:30 p.m., about six miles southwest of Idyllwood in the San Jacinto Mountains. According to the US Geological Survey, the first was a magnitude 3.8 earthquake, followed a minute later by a magnitude 3.5 earthquake.
The quakes were about four miles from Vale Vista, eight miles from Hemet, nine miles from San Jacinto, and thirteen miles from Beaumont. Residents reported mild to moderate tremors felt as far east as Cathedral City and Indio and as far west as Murrieta.
A spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said no damage was reported with the minor earthquake.
The Southern California earthquake followed a pair of earthquakes near San Juan Bautista on the Central Coast. The first was a magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 12:48 p.m., followed by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 12:57 p.m.
In the past 10 days, there were no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger near the Richter County epicenter.
An average of 234 earthquakes between magnitudes 3.0 and 4.0 occur each year in California and Nevada, according to a sample of the last three years of data.
