A new Pew study shows that Trump is losing love with Latinos

President Trump has aligned his second-term policies with the Latino vote…

A new study by the Pew Research Center found that most Latino adults in the United States are dissatisfied with the job Trump has done since returning to the White House earlier this year.

Ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations across the country and continued economic unrest have led many Latinos to resent the politician — whose 2024 campaign has focused on carrying out the “biggest deportation crackdown in American history” and boosting the nation’s fledgling economy.

Pew’s findings revealed that 70% of Latinos are dissatisfied with Trump’s performance as president. When it came to immigration, 65% disapproved of the current administration’s handling of the issue. Regarding the economy, 61 percent said that Trump’s policies have worsened the economic situation.

However, party affiliation still played an important role in how Latinos rated Trump’s performance. Overall, 81% of Latino Trump voters in 2024 approve of his job so far — an impressive level of support, though it’s down significantly from 93% since the start of his second term.

Among Latinos who voted for Kamala Harris, Trump had a 4% approval rating in February, which has since dropped to 0%. His approval rating among 2024 Latino non-voters fell from 42% to 27%. Overall, the president’s approval rating among all Latino groups has fallen from 42% at the start of the year to 27% this fall.

In the Pew study, Latino voters also expressed pessimism about their future in the United States. Of those surveyed, 68% said the situation for US Latinos is worse today than it was a year ago, 9% said it was better and 22% felt it was about the same. Harris voters significantly felt the situation was getting worse for Latinos at 89%. 66% of non-voters agree with this assessment; And 31% of Trump voters felt Latinos are worse off now than they were last year.

The majority of voters who turned red in 2024 — 40% — felt that the situation for Latinos in the United States was about the same throughout the year. Additionally, 28% of this voting bloc believe that US Latinos are better off now than in 2024.

This data is consistent with a recent Axios/Ipsos poll conducted in partnership with Noticias Telemundo.

Of the more than 1,100 people surveyed, 65% said it is a “bad time” to be Latino or Hispanic in the United States. When the poll was conducted in March 2024, the figure was 40%. When broken down by party, 84% of Democrats said it was a bad time, compared to 68% of independents and 32% of Republicans.

At 78%, a majority conducted by Pew feel that Trump’s policies have done more harm than good to the Latino community. Harris voters are once again united against Trump, with 97% agreeing that his policies have negatively affected their community. Non-voters agreed with 78% who felt the Republican president’s policies had a negative impact on Latinos.

Trump voters are split on the issue with 41% saying Trump’s policies have benefited Latinos, 34% believing they have been harmed and 22% saying they have had no effect.

The findings appear to disrupt the narrative that has pushed Latinos across the country in the politically correct direction in recent years.

In the 2024 presidential election, Trump received 48% of the Latino vote compared to Harris’ 51% share and significantly surpassed the 36% clip he received in the 2020 presidential election. 2024 primary polls actually underestimated Latino support for Trump, with the Republican candidate trailing 46% of the Latino vote on Election Day.

Additionally, 47% of naturalized citizens of all ethnic backgrounds voted for Trump in 2024, compared to 38% in 2020. In the same voting bloc, 51% voted for Harris in 2024, a significant drop from the 59% who voted for Joe Biden in 2020.

Naturalized Latinos registered a 12% increase in voting for Trump, rising from 39% in 2020 to 51% in 2024.
