BASKETBALL ROUNDUP PREPARING: Redondo Union prepares to compete with the best

For Redondo Union coach Reggie Morris Jr., there is no solution to the average or ordinary this basketball season. He has high expectations, and when most of his starters didn’t show up to perform on Tuesday, he quickly took them down.

“We’re trying to instill good habits,” Morris said.

The Seahawks (4-0), ranked No. 3 in the Southland by the Times, responded with a blitz that got the message from its players. Chase Holley finished with 20 points and SJ Madison had 19 in an 89-37 win over Laguna Hills as part of the Redondo Association Tournament.

The Seahawks lost twice to Sierra Kenya and two-time Open Division champions Eastville Roosevelt in hard-fought battles last season. They came close to winning but failed in the big moments. This season, Morris is coaching his team to prepare to beat the best in the South.

“We still have a lot of room for improvement,” he said. “We have a chance to be really good.”

A full-court pressure defense and plenty of speed and athleticism will make Redondo Union perhaps the main challengers for Sierra Leone this season. There isn’t much height but Morris hopes to make up for it with aggression and quickness. That’s why his players were warned on Tuesday that if you don’t perform, there’s a place on the bench and a chance for others.

Morris has won titles at Leuzinger, St. Bernard, Redondo Union and Fairfax. He knows what it takes to get to the top.
