Chargers QB Justin Herbert day-to-day after hand surgery

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent a surgical procedure on Monday to stabilize a fracture in his non-throwing hand and his status for Monday night’s game against Philadelphia will be determined later in the week.

Herbert was injured in the first quarter of Sunday’s win over Las Vegas when the back of his left hand apparently collided with the helmet of Raiders safety Jeremy Chin. The quarterback threw a touchdown pass on the play after the collision in question.

After that, he briefly left the game and applied a cast in the locker room. He soon returned to the game and wound up leading three more touchdown drives, especially operating out of a shotgun formation because snapping under center is more difficult with the cast.

Coach Jim Harbaugh pointed to Herbert’s toughness and ability to continue to throw accurate passes after the injury.

“He’s almost world-class when it comes to that,” the coach said. “There’s a lot of respect for that.”

The Chargers said Herbert’s return to the game is considered “day-to-day,” though the quarterback said after the game that the only way he won’t play is if the team doctor told him it would be “pretty silly.”

One issue that can be a concern is dropping the football, especially on runs to the right side when the quarterback usually uses his left hand.

“I think ball security is very important,” Herbert said after the game. “I think I did a good enough job of that in the pocket today. Just get involved with the running back. So it’s just stuff to work on.”
