A convicted felon has been arrested for the murder of a 14-month-old daughter
A Long Beach man who previously served time in prison for child abuse was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of torturing and killing his 14-month-old daughter, authorities said.
The child’s father, Alfredo Munoz, 40, and daughter, Kelly Munoz, 34, were arrested in connection with the child’s death in the 200 block of East Louis Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Officers initially responded Nov. 7 to a hospital where the child was found unresponsive with signs of severe trauma, police said. She was put on life support and died three days later. Her identity is being kept secret.
During a two-week investigation, homicide detectives determined the child was the victim of ongoing abuse and that her death was a direct result of abuse by her father and stepmother, police said.
Both suspects are being held without bail at the Long Beach Jail, and detectives plan to present the case to the LA County District Attorney’s Office for consideration next week.
Alfredo Munoz was previously sentenced to four years in state prison in December 2021 after he pleaded no contest to one count of intentional cruelty to a child likely to cause injury or death, according to court records.
A law enforcement source confirmed that the man charged in a previous Long Beach abuse case is the same man who was arrested Tuesday. The source, on condition of anonymity, said that they were not authorized to talk to the media about this.
Munoz was released from custody when the now-deceased child was allegedly abused.
