Living leaves behind pieces, our personal archive of memories and recorded memories. In “Excerpts and Fragments,” a new exhibition presented by the Los Angeles Department of Nomads, artist Paul Mpagi Sipuya examines fragments of life through three modes of practice: zine, books, and photographs. Through these documents, the viewer travels through Sepoy’s memory as he travels through New York and beyond in search of his artistic path and creative vision. Through this show, Sepoya offers a window into friendship, shared communities and personal growth. Open from November 8 to December 21. 2413 Hyperion Ave.Los Angeles. nomadicdivision.org

In a windy desert, Gabbert lifts his toe for a ride, running like a boxer in black mesh shoes. She wears Adidas and LA brand Miaou’s first collection, inspired by vintage biker style and West Coast women’s clothing. The Mesh Meow boot is low to the ground and low on its three-stripe detailing, leather heel and metal zipper. In footwear, apparel and accessories, elements of branding, athleticism and rebellious eloquence are woven through collaborations between iconic brands and bright-eyed newcomers. In sexual art, the disabled body is often not music. For disabled artist Panteha Abarishi, this expectation is shattered as she presents her desire and physical experience to be analyzed and examined in “CAREOTICS: Giving and Taking” in the field of human resources. Abarshi’s work comments on the nourishment and evaluation of disabled bodies and encourages viewers to reflect on their discomfort and joy. “CAREOTICS” features multimedia stimuli, from a film of Abarishi in a hospital bed to latex gloves printed with the words “This touch is your most painful and most horrible pleasure.” Open until November 16 in Human Resources. 410 Cottage Home St., Los Angeles. hr.la

The family is like a tapestry, stitched together into a continuous story despite different textures and experiences. At least that’s how Carmen Argot sees it. In her international exhibition, “gajes del oficio”, Argot collaborates with her mother to sew large scrolls, tapestries and dresses to honor the family tradition of embroidery as a means of financial independence and freedom for immigrants. Each stitched and intricate cover documents the quiet, underappreciated work of women in male-dominated households and industries. Open at Patzer’s through December 6. 1050 N. Mills Ave., Claremont. pitzer.edu

Marilyn Minter, a powerhouse of modern stylized portraiture, presents her fourth solo exhibition with The Reagan Project. Minter’s large paintings engage the viewer with a familiar face, whether it’s Nick Cave or Lizzo, in a cheerful smile, or a sultry look, in a sophisticated enamel painting technique that combines a soft, gray black color with the bold, saturated features of diverse figures. In addition to displaying images, Munter’s show has a decidedly political perspective, with artist Philip Guston taking cues from KKK imagery with symbols of white-hooded terror as he draws parallels with the modern MAGA hat. Clever, yet edgy, the Mentor exhibit begs to be discussed. Open through the Reagan Project December 20. 6750 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. regenprojects.com

These pieces are presented in dialogue with contemporary works from artists such as Caron Davis to Kara Walker. The exhibition appeals to America’s ever-changing relationship to its histories and the influential figures who have shaped them, for better or worse. Showing now through May 3. 250 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles; and 518 N. Western Ave., Los Angeles. moca.org, the-brick.org
